👋 Quick answer

Amritsar is the spiritual heart of Punjab. Give it two days. See the Golden Temple and the Jallianwala Bagh memorial. End with the Wagah Border ceremony at dusk. Eat superb Punjabi food between it all.

Amritsar grew around the Golden Temple. Guru Ram Das founded the city in 1577. It is Sikhism's holiest and most-visited place.

The old city packs shrines, bazaars and food. A sombre memorial recalls the 1919 massacre. The India-Pakistan border ceremony is nearby.

This guide covers the sights, food and a two-day plan. Every fact links to its source.

Amritsar is compact and easy to explore. The Golden Temple sits at its centre. Most sights lie within a short ride.

The city runs on faith, food and warmth. Pilgrims and travellers mix at every turn. Locals are famously hospitable.

Plan around the temple's rhythms. Dawn and late night are magical there. Save afternoons for the museum and forts.

The story of Amritsar

A little history and culture, in brief.

Amritsar was founded around a sacred pool. Guru Ram Das dug it in 1577. The Golden Temple rose beside the water.

The city became the heart of Sikhism. Maharaja Ranjit Singh gilded the shrine. His Sikh empire ruled the Punjab.

In 1919, tragedy struck at Jallianwala Bagh. Troops fired on a peaceful crowd. The massacre stirred the freedom struggle.

Partition in 1947 split the Punjab in two. Amritsar sat right on the new frontier. The border ceremony still plays out at Wagah.

Today the city blends faith and food. Pilgrims fill the temple day and night. The langar feeds all who come.

Amritsar means the pool of nectar. The name comes from the temple tank. The city grew around that sacred water.

It sat on old trade routes to Central Asia. Wealth from trade built its havelis and bazaars. That mercantile buzz survives today.
