When it was built, and by whom

Fatehpur Sikri was Akbar's dream capital. Built from 1571 in red sandstone. For about fourteen years it was the heart of the Mughal empire. Full of palaces, courts and a great mosque.

It was abandoned around 1585. Most likely due to water shortages. The palaces and the Jama Masjid survive beautifully. Its 54-metre Buland Darwaza is one of the tallest gateways in the world.

A closer look at Fatehpur Sikri

Akbar built this capital from 1571. It served for about fourteen years. He abandoned it around 1585.

A 6-kilometre wall rings the city. Nine gates pierce it. Red sandstone builds it throughout.

The Buland Darwaza soars 40 metres. It marks a Gujarat victory. It is among the world's tallest gateways.

The Jama Masjid is vast. Its court measures 165 by 130 metres. UNESCO listed the city in 1986.

The city was a planned masterpiece. Palaces, courts and a mosque rose fast. Water, though, ran short.

So Akbar left within fifteen years. The red city stood frozen in time. It survives remarkably intact.

The palaces reveal Akbar's vision. Hindu and Islamic forms merge. They mirror his blended court.

Akbar built it to thank a saint. Salim Chishti had blessed him with a son. The city rose in gratitude.

His famed Nine Jewels met here. Debates on faith filled the courts. It was a bold, open-minded age.

The red city sits on a ridge. It overlooks the plains below. The views carry for miles.
