The story of Hyderabad

A little history and culture, in brief.

Quli Qutb Shah founded Hyderabad in 1591. He built it near Golconda fort. The Charminar marked its centre.

The Nizams later ruled a vast state. Their wealth was legendary. Pearls, palaces and biryani flourished.

Telangana was carved out in 2014. Hyderabad became its capital. It is now a major tech hub too.

Golconda first rose as a diamond mart. The Qutb Shahis then built the city. The Nizams made it fabulously rich.

Its cuisine fused Persian and Deccan tastes. Biryani and haleem were perfected. That heritage still defines it.

Golconda's mines gave the world diamonds. The Koh-i-Noor came from here. So did the Hope diamond.

The Nizam was once the world's richest. His wealth was fabled. Palaces and jewels abounded.

Two languages meet in its speech. Telugu and Urdu blend. The dialect is uniquely Hyderabadi.

Biryani is a daily devotion. Every family has a favourite. Debates over it never end.

The Old City glows at Ramzan. Haleem simmers in huge pots. Night markets stay busy.

Tech reshaped the western city. Glass towers rose in HITEC City. Old and new now coexist.
