The story of Mahabalipuram

A little history and culture, in brief.

Mahabalipuram was a Pallava port. King Narasimhavarman I founded it. He was nicknamed Mamalla.

Ships traded with Sri Lanka and beyond. Sculptors carved the living rock. Temples rose along the shore.

UNESCO listed the monuments in 1984. Sea and stone frame them still. It is a short trip from Chennai.

Pallava kings prized fine art. They carved gods from the granite. The work still awes today.

Marco Polo's era called it the Seven Pagodas. Sea and sand frame the ruins. UNESCO now guards them.

The town honours a Pallava king. Mamalla means great wrestler. His port bore his name.

Legends speak of seven pagodas. Six, they say, lie underwater. Only the Shore Temple remains.

Stone carving lives on today. A school trains new sculptors. The craft is centuries old.

The Shore Temple faces the waves. Salt spray has worn it soft. Yet it still stands proud.

A 2004 tsunami revealed more. Old carvings surfaced offshore. The legends gained weight.

Chisels ring through the town. New sculptors learn the craft. Granite becomes gods again.
