Jaisalmer centres on its hilltop fort. With the old town and havelis spread below. Gadisar Lake sits to the south-east. The Sam dunes. Most desert camps lie about 40 km west.

Jaisalmer is only comfortable from October to March;. The desert is brutally hot the rest of the year. Winter nights are cold. So pack warm layers for the dunes.

Jaisalmer has a small airport (seasonal flights). An overnight train link from Jodhpur and Delhi. Most travellers arrive by train or by car on the Rajasthan loop.

The old town is walkable; autos. Jeeps handle longer hops. For the Sam dunes. Camps arrange transfers. Or you can hire a jeep for the 40 km each way.

A little history and culture, in brief.

Jaisalmer was founded by Rao Jaisal in 1156. He chose a hill deep in the Thar. The Golden Fort rose upon it.

The city grew rich on caravan trade. Camel routes linked it to Central Asia. Merchants built its jewel-box havelis.

When sea trade rose, the caravans faded. Jaisalmer slipped into quiet decline. Tourism later revived the golden city.
