Jodhpur's blue old city wraps the hill below Mehrangarh. With the Clock Tower and Sardar Market at its centre. Umaid Bhawan sits on a hill to the south-east; newer areas spread beyond.

Jodhpur is best from October to March. When the desert heat eases. Summers are punishing; the short monsoon brings some relief, greener surrounds.

Jodhpur has an airport and is a major rail junction. Well linked to Delhi, Jaipur and Jaisalmer. A car. Driver connects it easily to Udaipur and the desert.

The compact old city is best on foot. With autos for longer hops and app cabs after dark. Overnight trains to Jaisalmer and Delhi are a comfortable, money-saving option.

A little history and culture, in brief.

Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459. He moved his capital to this rocky ridge. Mehrangarh rose to guard it.

The city was the seat of Marwar. Its rulers grew rich on the desert trade. Grand havelis and forts show that wealth.

The old town's blue houses have many tales. Some link the colour to Brahmin homes. Others say it simply keeps rooms cool.

Jodhpur breeches were born of this city. The riding trousers took its very name. Its horse culture runs deep.
